Homer Smith heads west stopping as the spirit moves him. In the Southwest, he encounters a group of nuns and is drawn into their lives. He comes to share in their dream of building a chapel, but the project proves to be burdensom and discouraging. He leaves, but Mother Marthe is convinced that he will return - and he does.
